New Hampshire’s top 8 events this weekend (Jan. 19-21)

There is a lot of fun to be had in New Hampshire this weekend. From exploring your artistic side using liquid glass to an introductory forest bathing class, the range of events across our state is really something.

Here are our top eight picks. 

Merrimack Valley

Attend a 3D liquid glass workshop

Jan. 19, 6:30-9 p.m.

Bedford 

The Canvas Roadshow/ Hammer & Stain in Bedford is hosting DIY workshops throughout the season. You’ll make your own liquid glass art on Jan. 19. You’ll choose colors that work with your home and take them with you when you leave. The class will start promptly at the time noted. Email i[email protected] to register.

See furniture inspired by New Hampshire 

Bethlehem 

Now through Feb. 26

“Out of the Forest,” the newest exhibition in the Gallery at WREN on Main Street in Bethlehem features the work of furniture maker Ron Ramback and painter Stephanie Potter, whose works are both influenced by the natural elements of New Hampshire. Potter began to develop her own style with the creation of her small business,Tree Style Designs. The saws and roofing slates that she paints are pulled out of old barns, sawmills, and workshops, and given new life and purpose.  

Ramback’s learning experiences and attitude of perseverance are reflected in his craft. He works with resins and compromised wood, which produces challenges that can be very unforgiving. The Gallery at WREN is open Monday – Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Many pieces in the exhibit are available for purchase.  

Learn how to make needle-felted animals

Jan. 20, 1-3 p.m.

Laconia  

A beginner needle felt class will be held at Prescott Farm in Laconia. You’ll learn the basics of needle felting and even get to take home a felted New Hampshire animal. The cost is $30 for non-members and $15 for members.

Get twisty in snowshoe yoga

Jan. 20, 10 a.m. to noon

Laconia

Walk a mile in the woods and then practice yoga on snowshoes in this introductory  shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing class. You’ll experience inner calm in nature with yoga poses, a guided walking meditation. Snowshoes are available at no extra charge to borrow or guests may bring their own. The cost is $32 for non-members and $17 for members.   

Seacoast

Friday, Saturday, 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, 3:30 p.m. 

North Conway

M&D Playhouse in North Conway is showing “Eddie and Dave,” a play by Amy Staaats about hubris, friendship, family, fame, and musical genius, where women embody the roles of the titular characters. They play petty, pampered, spoiled, solipsistic little boys who only occasionally resemble adults.  

Learn about the wilderness at Nature@Nite

Friday, 4 p.m.

Rye

Offered on the third Friday of the month, each Nature@Nite at the Seacoast Science Center in Rye is based on a different theme. The theme on Jan. 19 will be wildlife wanderings. Activities are designed to build confidence and empower participants of all ages in learning through science play and discovery. Popup story times may be offered based on the evening’s theme and a guided nature program begins at 5 p.m. Sign-up is available at the admissions desk starting at 4 p.m. on the event date.

Portsmouth

“In the Garden of Z,” shown at the New Hampshire Theatre Project in Portsmouth, tells the story of a Russian girl’s reaction and response to the horrors of the war in Ukraine and how it motivates her to examine her family, her culture, history, war, and the nature of propaganda. Jelizaveta Robinson and her husband, Sean, wrote the play after almost two years of research. Robinson, while pregnant with her son, began understanding Russian state media and propaganda being used to gather support for the war. The play is recommended for ages 13 and up.
