You probably already know Friendly’s and Ben & Jerry’s as New England ice cream juggernauts, but there’s one chain of ice cream shops that’s been going in the region since 1940.
Business Insider named a Nashua mainstay as the most iconic and beloved ice cream shop in New Hampshire. It’s been in business for over 80 years.
“From century-old soda fountains and roadside stands to small-batch creameries that have become national sensations, these destinations offer more than just a good scoop,” Business Insider said.

Business Insider named Hayward’s Ice Cream in Nashua as the most iconic and beloved ice cream shop in New Hampshire because of its sheer longevity, pledging that they’ve been making homemade ice cream since 1940.
“The family-owned shop is known for serving enormous scoops in dozens of flavors, from maple walnut to moose tracks,” the publication said of the multi-generational business.
They also have other shops in New Hampshire, from Merrimack to Milford. Their flavor of the month in July 2026 is Blueberry Crumble.
“Stop by today and taste why Hayward’s has been voted ‘Best Ice Cream’ more than any other ice cream in New England,” the Hayward’s website said.
