Not just another week of #NHPolitics Ins and Outs, this one was totally off the rails.
Let’s get into it.
Who’s In?
Federal Delegation Hits The Ground — Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan spent much of the week stumping for Democratic candidate for Governor Joyce Craig and down ballot Democrats this week, launching canvasses and appearing at multiple events with Craig.
Joyce Mops The Floor — When Craig and Kelly Ayotte met for the second gubernatorial debate of the general election, the outcome was decidedly less even than the first, with Ayotte stumbling and Craig pressing her advantages on key issues. Check out our full write up for the three moments that earned Joyce the win.
My Old Kentucky Home — New Hampshire got a big visit this week from major Democratic party star Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, who headlined the New Hampshire Democratic Party’s Eleanor Roosevelt Dinner Thursday. We got an exclusive chat with the governor while he was here, look for that next week!
More Endorsements! — This week, State Senator Donovan Fenton was endorsed by the New Hampshire Professional Fire Fighters (PFFNH) for State Senate District 10, while congressional candidate Maggie Goodlander was endorsed by the NEA-NH.
Who’s Out!
Republican Legal Issues Out The Wazoo — New Hampshire Republicans had so many legal issues this week, a thick scholarly text could be written from the last seven days alone:
INDICTED — Republican Supreme Court Justice Anna Barbara Hantz Marconi was indicted this week, charged with two felonies for allegedly attempting to interfere with the criminal investigation of her husband, Geno Marconi, Director of the New Hampshire Port Authority, who was arrested the next day. Check out NH Bulletin for the full story.
ARRESTED — Republican former New Hampshire State Senator Andy Sanborn was arrested this week and charged with felony theft. Sanborn, who owns the Concord Casino, allegedly misrepresented business records in order to receive $188,000 more than he was entitled to in 202 from the state’s “Main Street Relief Fund.” Sanborn is accused of using the funds to pay for the mortgage of a lake house owned by his wife, NH GOP State Rep Laurie Sanborn. This comes a little more than a year after the state said Sanborn and his wife were found to have used using nearly $1 million in COVID-19 funds to buy sports cars. Check out the Concord Monitor for the full story.
THROWN OUT — Disgraced former State Lawmaker Ross Berry had his lawsuit against the Goffstown public library thrown out this week after a judge ruled against his request for a temporary restraining order against the library in a bid to stop it from releasing the results of a candidate questionnaire. Instead, the judge dismissed Berry’s lawsuit altogether.
Berry seems intent on building a lasting legacy in 2024, suing a beloved public institution months after having left the NH House of Representatives in disgrace after being removed from leadership for concocting a convoluted scheme to trick Democratic lawmakers.
