A huge shoutout to New Hampshire’s own Robert Eggers, the writer and director behind the Oscar-nominated “Nosferatu.”
This remake of the 1922 horror classic is based on Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel “Dracula.” Eggers’ version stars Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, with Nicholas Hoult and Lily-Rose Depp portraying Thomas and Ellen Hutter. The cast also includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe.
Eggers, who grew up in Lee, New Hampshire, has deep ties to “Nosferatu.” He directed a version of the film while attending Oyster High School before being invited by Edward Langlois to helm a professional adaptation at the Edwin Booth Theater in Dover, according to the Foster’s Daily Democrat. Fun fact—Eggers’ twin brothers, Max and Sam, who are also filmmakers, played gargoyles in the production, according to The New Yorker. Eggers credits this experience as the turning point that inspired his filmmaking career.
While “Nosferatu” was first announced in 2015, its release was delayed so Eggers could direct “The Lighthouse” (co-written with Max) and “The Northman” first.
“Nosferatu” opened on Christmas and has already earned $166 million worldwide, according to The Numbers, making it Eggers’ highest-grossing film to date! It also received four Oscar nominations, including Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Production Design.
Tune in to the Oscars on March 2 on ABC, where Conan O’Brien will be hosting. Check out the complete list of nominees.
