New Hampshire has long been celebrated for its scenic beauty, small-town charm, and independent spirit. But no place is perfect. Last week, we asked residents what they would change about the Granite State, and responses poured in on a variety of topics—from politics to infrastructure to pets. Here’s a roundup of what people had to say.
Cost of Living Concerns
Many residents pointed to the rising cost of living as a major issue.
“Republican governors have risen the costs of living in this state immensely,” said Elaina Valzania. “Property taxes, electric bills, and water rates keep going up. The worst part of NH is we cater to tourists and businesses who receive lots of luxuries while property taxpayers foot the bill.”
Cynthia Wilson echoed similar frustrations, saying, “I wish the state legislators would stop passing down costs to the towns’ property tax payers while saying their expenses don’t raise taxes at the state level.”
Election Season Eyesores
Political signs cluttering the roads during election season are another pet peeve for some residents.
“Stop all the road signs staked out during any election,” said Kay Cummings. “Do people really think that these signs will get the candidate more votes? All these signs make the towns look shabby and trashy.”
Traffic & Transportation Troubles
For Ashley Fitzpatrick, getting around the state could be made much more efficient.
“A more efficient way to get from the towns on the I-93 side to the Everett Turnpike side! It takes me 45 minutes to visit my friend who lives 15 miles away as the crow flies,” she said.
Dog-Friendly Spaces
Pet owners, too, had their suggestions for improvement. Stephanie Zoufaly would like to see more access for dogs in state parks and campgrounds.
“They are a part of our family, and I would like to be able to take them with us when we hike and camp,” she said.
