New Hampshire is taking part in the growing trend of “gear libraries” to help those unable to afford the costs of outdoor recreation.
The goal is to help people get active by offering free access to bikes, snowshoes and other equipment while reducing the amount of used gear ending up in landfills.
Bruce Caplain, executive director of the nonprofit Bike the North Country, said rentals are available for people of all sizes and abilities in Bethlehem, Littleton and Franconia.
“We’ve had nothing but rave reviews,” Caplain reported. “Absolutely no complaints, which is amazing.”
Supporters said gear libraries allow people to use quality bikes and avoid purchasing cheaper models, which can wear out quickly and end up in the trash. It is estimated nearly 10 million used inner tubes from bike wheels alone are sent to landfills each year in the U.S. Caplain pointed out gear donations are always welcome while financial donations help offset any maintenance costs.
People interested in using the gear libraries can secure the equipment online. Renters must be at least 18 years of age or have a parent rent and sign a waiver, and can check out images of the various models available. Once finished, renters simply take a photo of the bike before returning it to its designated shed.
Caplain noted the libraries are helping build a sense of community both on and off the trails.
“If someone is able to borrow a bike, they’re suddenly part of that community,” Caplain observed. “When you’re riding the trails or riding the rail trail, everyone is super friendly and almost always someone will stop; ‘Where are you riding, what did you ride, where did you come from?'”
Caplain added there is, of course, a health aspect behind the creation of the gear libraries, too. Biking is known for its cardiovascular benefits and can improve mental clarity and mood. He stressed e-bike rentals have been especially popular and can help beginners, who may need some additional assistance getting up a steep hill.
