“A law that delays registration, even by one day or a few hours, is more likely to deprive qualified voters access to the ballot.” — Judge Samantha Elliott on a restrictive voting law in NH, via New Hampshire Bulletin.

Happy 603 day, Granite Staters!
Today’s a day to celebrate the 603 area code, which has been part of the state’s identity for about 40 years. It was given to us in October 1947 as one of the 86 original North American area codes.
But the iconic number is starting to run out of room. As more cellphones, businesses, and connected devices need numbers, experts project that the available 603 phone numbers could be exhausted by 2032. 😔
Here is some other news this morning:

🧩 New Hampshire is rolling out a new tool designed to make traffic stops less stressful for drivers with autism …
The state’s new Blue Envelope Program is now available at DMV offices. The envelopes are intended for drivers with autism spectrum disorder and contain information and guidance to help improve communication during interactions with law enforcement. The bipartisan initiative was signed into law last year and officially launched this month. Keene Sentinel
🫎 Meanwhile, a dead moose left along the Kancamagus Highway for several days over Memorial Day weekend has sparked criticism from residents and state officials …
A Lincoln resident and Executive Councilor Joe Kenney say a moose carcass remained beside the scenic roadway for at least four days after a collision, raising concerns about the state’s response and the image it presents to visitors. The Department of Transportation says removal timelines depend on safety risks, staffing, and available resources. InDepthNH
🏥 And in the North Country, a state investigation has led to new oversight requirements for one of the region’s largest healthcare providers …
The Attorney General’s Charitable Trust Unit found that North Country Healthcare’s leadership failed to follow proper bylaws when removing a hospital affiliate president and did not adequately recruit a permanent replacement. While investigators found no legal violations involving executive compensation or vendor contracts, the organization has agreed to reforms that include an independent governance consultant, public listening sessions, and increased oversight. 🏡 Meanwhile, authorities have released new details about a tragic death investigation in Dover …
State officials say 78-year-old Eileen Shevelin was killed by her son in a murder-suicide at her Dover home. Investigators determined Thomas Wallace, 57, killed his mother before taking his own life. Friends and former colleagues remembered Shevelin as a longtime volunteer who regularly brought her golden retriever to local assisted living facilities to visit residents. Foster’s Daily Democrat

It’s not easy to find apartments in New Hampshire that the average renter can afford. (Chris Robert/Unsplash)

What can you rent for $1,200 in New Hampshire? In a word, very few places. In total, we found 14 listings on major apartment rental sites.
Zillow has six listings in this category: two in Keene, three in Berlin (two of which include heat), and two in Litchfield that don’t include utilities. Applicants have to meet HUD’s low-income limits. Apartments.com has no listings for this price, and ForRent.com lists a total of eight two-bedroom, one-bath rentals ranging from $1,000 in Kingston for a shared apartment to a 1,000-square-foot apartment in Keene, including heat.

Personal story: I’m trying to book a trip to Florida in November, and direct flights are going for nearly $1,000. This time last year, I paid just $175 for the exact same route.
So this week’s question is:
|
Has this economy changed your summer vacation plans?
