March is Women’s History Month, a time to recognize women’s historical contributions, raise awareness of gender equality issues, and inspire future progress. (Read more about the celebratory month here.)
FYI: The time to recognize women dates back to 1981. It was just a week at first before it became a full month in 1987.
New Hampshire has been home to some incredible women. Here are a few you might not know have connections to the Granite State.
💪 Annie Oakley, the renowned sharpshooter and star of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show, frequently visited a resort near Portsmouth to participate in shooting competitions and exhibitions.
💪 Harriet Patience Dame defied the norms of her time. She worked as a nurse for New Hampshire’s troops during the American Civil War when everyone thought women were too fragile for the tough work of caring for troops.
💪 Christa McAuliffe, a teacher and astronaut, died in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986. She was laid to rest in Blossom Hill Cemetery in her hometown of Concord.
