This week, we asked readers: What piece of history do you think deserves more attention as America turns 250?
Here’s what they had to say…
“Consider how long it took for voting rights to evolve from only male property owners being enfranchised to voting becoming the right of all American citizens once they reach 18. And the fight continues to make access to the ballot equal for everyone.” — Cyndie Wilson
“The Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. Amazing foresight from 250 years ago, and they remain totally relevant 250 years later.” — Daniel Genest
“We teach our young people almost nothing about the role Indigenous people and Black Americans played in the Revolution. This is contrary to the principles we profess to embrace as a nation and should be corrected.” — JoAnn Carlson
“To me, it’s important to honor everyone who fought for this country, whether in the military or behind the scenes, and helped bring us to this 250th anniversary. I believe every president, from George Washington to President Biden, honored our country’s commitments and expanded them, for better or worse. But over the past little more than a year, I feel we’ve fallen back significantly.” — Charles Wetzel
