January is getting a spirited twist—without the spirits! Nearly 70 restaurants across New Hampshire are serving alcohol-free cocktails to celebrate the annual New Hampshire Mocktail Month. The month-long event is part of an effort to promote a more inclusive, responsible drinking culture.

The New Hampshire Liquor Commission (NHLC) partnered with the Brown-Forman Corporation and local restaurants through their “Live Free & Host Responsibly” initiative, which launched in 2016.

“New Hampshire Mocktail Month redefines the way consumers socialize and celebrate, and we are proud to partner with Brown-Forman to promote a safe and inclusive drinking environment,” said NHLC chair Joseph Mollica.

According to a Civic Science study, nearly a quarter of Americans participated in Dry January last year, and interest in the challenge continues to grow. Google Trends shows searches for Dry January have increased each year, and if the trend continues, 2025 could see record participation, according to Newsweek.

Ian Andersen, co-founder of the alcohol moderation app Sunnyside told Newsweek he expects over 75 million adults to join the movement this year.

The New Hampshire program, “allows restaurants to better accommodate customers who are choosing not to imbibe or simply want to pause drinking by offering them elevated and creative alcohol-free options,” Mollica said.

For local participating restaurants, Brown-Forman is covering the $2,500 cost of SAFE Bar Network training. Establishments that join the network will also receive discounts on their hospitality insurance premiums.

“We believe it is our duty to make sure our products are being marketed and enjoyed responsibly by encouraging awareness and empowering mindful choices,” said Tiffany Drury, a senior alcohol responsibility specialist at Brown-Forman. “Responsibility is not just about individual choices, but also about fostering an environment that is safe and inclusive for everyone, and New Hampshire Mocktail Month allows us to promote that message in a unique way.”

Beyond the restaurants, NHLC has created a downloadable online recipe guide, offering everything home enthusiasts need to craft delicious zero-proof drinks.
