Every year, people take to the White Mountains to try and complete New Hampshire’s 48 peaks over 4,000 feet.

Spread out over the national forest, some of the mountains are closer than others. If you’re looking to get started on your 4,000-footer list, you might want to hit the ones that are closest to Boston first.

Here are the mountains you should aim for.

Which NH 4,000-footers in NH are the shortest drive to Boston?

Franconia Notch State Park and Waterville Valley are home to some of the closest 4,000-footers to get to from Boston.

Conveniently located right off I-93, these mountains take just over two hours of driving to reach, according to Google Maps.

  • Mount Tecumseh (Waterville Valley, 2 hours and 2 minutes):4,003 ft

  • Mount Osceola and East Osceola (Waterville Valley, 2 hours and 10 minutes): 4,340 ft, East 4,156 ft.

Technically, the furthest south mountain is Mount Whiteface. But located relatively far from a major highway, it takes a little longer to get to – about 2 hours and 19 minutes.

New England Waterfalls rates the difficulty of the White Mountains 4,000 footer hikes on a scale of 1 to 10. According to them, some of the easiest from this list are Osceola (5 – take the trail for Tripoli Road) and Tecumseh (5). Mount Lafayette was ranked the hardest at a 9. All hiking in the White Mountains should be done with care and preparation.

Which NH 4,000-footers are the furthest from Boston?

The furthest north mountains of the 48 are Cabot and Waumbek, located in the Great North Woods.

Mount Waumbek takes about 2 hours and 39 minutes to get to, while Mount Cabot is about 3 hours and 23 minutes away from Boston.

The eastern most 4,000-footers also take a while to get to from Boston: Mount Moriah and the Carters are over three hours away by car.
