Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on March 10 demanding a $1,745 refund for every household in the state to offset the financial impact of Trump’s tariffs. Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee followed suit shortly thereafter.
This week, we asked readers: Should New Hampshire Gov. Kelly Ayotte demand tariff refunds for NH households?
Here’s what they had to say:
“Yes she should. She doesn’t do much for our state . We need a NH defender, not a Trump follower.” — Sharon Clarke
“Yes, she should! Based on her actions thus far I highly doubt she will, as she will not go against the regime. She’s not for the people of NH! She’s one of Donald Trump’s minions.” — Patrina Ivey
“It would be nice if Trump shared some of the billions he’s making off his presidency, but I’m not holding my breath. Gov. Ayotte seems to be more concerned with making nice with the Trump administration than with the welfare of NH citizens, so I’m not holding my breath waiting for her to do anything either.” — JoAnn Carlson
“I believe every household in our nation is entitled to compensation due to this illegal actions of Trump! It is only fair and just that Kelly gets it for our state!” — Mary Richmond
“Yes, our governor should follow suit, but I do not believe she will since she follows in the footsteps of the MAGA party. As far as the money, more should go to larger families and less to a single person because those with more people in their family have paid higher tariffs. I’m a single person and don’t believe I deserve a higher return on tariffs than those around me who are raising 3 to 4 children. They deserve a higher return on tariffs.” — Chuck Wetzel
“If only she had the courage to worry about NH folks and not her political career.” — Sandy Keans
“Hell yes! But she’s too in love with Trump and the Republicans to do anything like that.” — David Masters
“Yes, why not? Donald Trump said he would lower gas, grocery, housing — even breathing — costs (like we’ve never seen). I’m not seeing it. Many households would benefit from a refund. We were lied to, so we should be paid. But that’s right — all our money is currently going to a war that is supposed to make us safer… we’ll see.” — Mary Samson
“She should absolutely demand tariff refunds for New Hampshire households! She and the rest of the GOP need to stop kowtowing to him and do what is best for their constituents.” — Jane Duggan
“Yes, it would be wonderful for Kelly Ayotte to push for refunds to US citizens in this state to reimburse us for the tariffs we’ve had to pay. The impact of these tariffs was not meant to fall on tax-paying Americans, yet many of us are bearing that cost. I have personally had to pay a significant amount in tariffs. Parts I needed for an older car were not available in the US, so I had to source and purchase them from overseas and have them shipped to my mechanic. This nearly doubled the cost of already expensive items. I am a retired state worker living on a small pension, and I cannot afford to replace my vehicle. I need to keep repairing what I have to ensure safe transportation.” — Mary-Alisa
“Has Kelly Ayotte done anything that is not in accordance with the desires of the Trump administration and Project 2025? She is using our state troopers and police to assist ICE. Without any transparency, a facility appears to be going up in Merrimack without any input from the public. As a resident of Hollis, this is not welcome. Apparently the state motto, ”Live free or die,’ has lost its meaning as far as the state government is concerned, as Ayotte embraces big government over independence.”— Tim McGuckin
“She’s in Trump’s pocket, so she probably won’t do it unless someone can put pressure on her. I’m still wondering how she could, in good faith, accept a donation of $83,000 from the Purdue group — hooray opioids as long as they pay! She’s starting to show her stripes, and they aren’t good.” — Michael Blackledge
